A day in the life of Ian
Healthcare Porter
Career background:
My background is in construction, and I spent 40 years as a plasterer. After that, I was in and out of jobs until I started in HCC for my previous employer – before the TUPE process saw me join Spectrum.
What do you love about working at Spectrum?
The thing I love about working for Spectrum is all the people that I work alongside daily, doing what I can to help them the best I can.
Why do you recommend others work Spectrum?
Again, it boils down to the people.
Top tips for working at Spectrum:
I think it’s about treating everyone with the same respect and courtesy, regardless of title, band, or grade.
This is what a day in the life of a Prison Healthcare Porter can look like:
I get into the office, fill the photocopier and printer with paper, check my emails, check the clinic rooms are stocked up, and liase with admin/pharmacy staff/other colleagues. I also keep on top of the feedback forms we receive back, print off any app forms we need, and take urgent bloods to take to local hospital. Checking in on other departments (in case they need supplies etc) is important, and I go around the wings to hand out apps and empty the healthcare boxes. Other responsibilities include picking up healthcare post and delivering it to relevant staff, picking up medication from local hospital and pharmacies, and maybe dropping off bloods at the hospital on the way home from work.
